The Penfield Players Association is partnering with the Legal Aid Society of Rochester (LASROC) to help finance increasing filing fees for their Immigration Unit.

The LASROC Immigration Unit provides legal representation, advice, and information on various immigration matters to community members and their families. They seek to vigorously defend the rights of their clients and ensure dignified, equal, and respectful treatment. In addition, LASROC represents those fleeing persecution and seeking protection in the United States.  Due to recent legislation changes that have targeted humanitarian cases, filing fees have skyrocketed. LASROC does not charge legal fees, and the money raised will go straight to various immigration filing fees.

  • Asylum seekers need to pay $100 filing fee and an additional $100 per year while their asylum case is pending.

  • Temporary Protective Status (TPS) filing fees were previously less than $100 and have now been raised to nearly $600.

  • Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), for children abandoned, neglected, or abused by one or both parents, is a process which puts children on the path to a green card.  These applications were formerly free and are now $250. Applying for multiple children can see the fees add up quickly.
