Take a smart and spirited couple. Put them in a mystifying asylum. Confuse them about what is real and what is not. Let them try to work out their own happiness and their own understanding – of each other – of the world outside their room – and of the differences between reality and illusion. Watch them grow to genuinely love one another, watch them fight, and then watch them laugh together. They give each other the strength to resist the watchful asylum and the interfering psychiatrist. They enjoy their games, their play, their pretenses. They decorate Christmas trees that are not there. They have vulnerabilities: their fragile connections to each other and to their elusive selves. Would they be any better off in the outside world? Are we?
